Kong Juan Carlos 1. blev født i Rom i 1938, han er søn
af Don Juan de Borbon y Battenberg,
Greve af Barcelona og Donna Maria de las Mercedes de Borbon
y Orleans.
I 1931 blev kongens bedstefar HM Kong Alfonso 13. tvunget
i eksil, da republikken blev proklameret. Kongefamilien
flygtede til Rom. Kong Alfonso 13. døde i 1941, og fem
år senere flyttede hele familien til Lissabon i
Portugal. Juan Carlos blev, efter faderens ønske, uddannet i Spanien,
dels tog han en universitetsgrad og dels uddannede han sig
inden for militæret. I 1962 giftede hans sig med den
græske Prinsesse Sofia, datter af HM Kong Paul 1. og
Dronning Frederika, Sofia's bror og svigerinde er ex-Kong
Konstantin og ex-Dronning Anne-Marie af Grækenland. |

I 1969
blev Juan Carlos udpeget til kommende regent efter general
Francisco Franco, og han fik titlen Prins af Spanien. Da
general Franco døde i 1975 blev Spanien et konstitutionelt
monarki under HM Kong Juan Carlos 1. Juan Carlos' far Greven
af Barcelona opgav i 1977 sine rettigheder som

I
was born i Rome
in 1938 as son of Don Juan de
Borbon y Battenberg, Count of Barcelona and Donna Maria de
las Mercedes de Borbon y Orleans.
Juan Carlos' grandfather,
Alfonso XIII, had been forced into exile in 1931 following
two decades of turbulence for the Spanish monarchy. The
former King passed away in 1941, and five years later the
entire family moved to the Portuguese capital of Lisbon.
Juan Carlos took his university degree and military
education in Spain - the Count of Barcelona's wish for his
son. In 1962 he married the Greek Princess Sofia, daughter
of King Paul I and Queen Frederika - Sofia's brother and sister-in-law
are ex-King Constantine and ex-Queen Anne-Marie of Greece.
In 1969 Juan Carlos was designated heir to the throne with
the title of the Prince of Spain by General Francisco Franco.
He was proclaimed King in 1975. Stamps issued 2001 and 1995.
